Holiday Theme Parties 101

Every college student loves a good theme party.  Holiday season is especially great because you get to throw in some fun Christmas ones and it isn’t weird. (For some reason having a Mr.&Mrs. Clause party in April just feels weird to me? Who knows.) My friends and I will be going on our fourth themed party in three months here in a few weekends (we may have a small addiction) and believe it or not, it is actually possible to both throw and attend one awesome theme party without breaking the bank.

Here are some ideas of possible themes for all you hosts out there. Just a few ideas that are a combination of things I have found surfing the web and some original ones as well. Your party will be bangin’ on a buck. (Okay, maybe a little more than just one buck but you get the idea)
Ugly Sweater- You know you have one. Bust it out, wear with pride. If on the strange occasion you didn’t bring the reindeer sweater gammy knitted for you to college, hit up goodwill. They have an abundance. Trust me.
Mr.& Mrs. Clause- Everyone can dress as either one of these characters. Let your guests have fun with this one. Decorate with cheap sparkly tinsel, holiday punch and cut out Christmas cookies that come in a package for a little over a dollar for a twelve pack…making them cheap and delicious. Can’t beat it.
Red Green Party- Pretty self-explanatory. Everyone must wear something red or green, or perhaps a festive combination of the two. As with most theme parties, it’s fun to go over the top. I’m talking red and green everything. Gloves, hats, socks, shoes, you name it. This theme also caters to affordable decorating. Red punch, red and green Christmas cookies, red and green M&M’s, the possibilities are really endless.
“Christmas in July”…except...opposite- Think the Christmas in July party, but opposite. It actually is Christmas time, but you dress like its July. Get it? Beach balls, fruity drinks, grass skirts, sunscreen the whole nine yards. Tell your guests to dress beachy and take a break from the puffy coats and winter boots they’ve been sporting lately. Santa hats and some Christmas décor will definitely be appropriate.
Christmas Movie Marathon- Home Alone (1,2, and 3), The Grinch, Richie Rich, The Christmas Story, Elf, National Lampoon…I’d go on but I think I’ve made my point. Grab some pillows and blankets and 15 of your closest friends and snuggle in to get hit by the nostalgia stick. These movies are sure to bring back some great childhood memories and have only gotten more special over time. Have everyone bring a mug and make some hot chocolate and popcorn for some snackage. Kind of wishing I could ditch work right now and go have a movie marathon myself.
